Choose Your Own FER is an interactive choose-your-own-adventure story that imagines a world shaped by Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). You navigate the narration paths by displaying different facial expressions, directly engaging with the technology as you learn about its potential implications.

We are a team passionate about blending artificial intelligence with interactive storytelling. Our goal is to create experiences that respond to human emotion in real time, making every encounter unique and personal.

This project was born from the idea that emotions aren't just data points — they're the foundation of how we experience stories, make decisions, and connect with each other.

This experience uses a deep learning model trained on the FER2013 dataset to recognize facial emotions from your webcam feed in real time. The model detects four primary emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise.

Your video frame is captured every second, sent to our backend API, and analyzed by the neural network. The detected emotion then determines which branch of the story you follow next — making your face the controller for the narrative.

All processing happens locally on your machine. No video data is stored or transmitted beyond what's needed for real-time prediction.
